Joyce and/in Italy

The 5th James Joyce Graduate Conference, endorsed by The James Joyce Italian Foundation, will be hosted by the Department of Comparative Literatures at the Università Roma Tre, on February 16th and 17th 2012, to celebrate Joyce’s 130th birthday.

The James Joyce Birthday Conference will be open on February 16th, with the official welcome of  Guido Fabiani, Rector of Università Roma Tre, Francesca Cantù, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Otello Lottini, Head of the Department of Comparative Literature and Franca Ruggieri, President of The James Joyce Italian Foundation.

Plenary speakers will include Piero Boitani, Università La Sapienza, Richard Brown, University of Leeds and Carla Marengo, Università of Turin. On Saturday 18th Umberto Eco will give a lecture on Joyce’s Sirens, “Le Sirene di Joyce: una voce e due testi”.

In the evening of Thursday 16th the Embassy of Ireland will host a reception to honour Joyce’s birthday, thanks to His Excellency Patrick Hennessy, Irish Ambassador to Italy, followed by the book review of James Joyce, Ulisse (a cura di Enrico Terrinoni, traduzione di Enrico Terrinoni con Carlo Bigazzi) Newton Compton, Roma 2012, with John McCourt and Franca Ruggieri.

On Friday 17th a roundtable with the title Joyce Italiano will involve Serenella Zanotti, Ira Torresi, Rosa Maria Bosinelli, Franca Ruggieri, John McCourt, Carla Marengo Vaglio, Paola Pugliatti, Enrico Terrinoni.

The Annual General Meeting of The James Joyce Italian Foundation will be held in the afternoon.

It also sets out to facilitate active exchange between graduate students and practitioners in the field of Joyce Studies and related fields on the opportunities and challenges of undertaking research on Joyce. These UCD James Joyce Research Centre events are sponsored in part by the UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland and the UCD John Hume Institute for Global Irish Studies.

The deadline for the receipt of all completed application material is Friday, 10 February 2012.

Speakers will analyse and debate the usefulness of particular methodologies and theoretical positions for aspects of research projects that they have concluded or their applicability for works in progress.
The delegates at the colloquium will include doctoral and post-doctoral students currently engaged in research on Joyce at universities in Ireland, across Europe, North America, and elsewhere. Although there is no charge, registration is required. MA and PhD students, Joyce scholars, and those with an active interest in Joyce are invited to attend. Joyceans and Irish Studies specialists in Ireland are particularly welcome.
Close dialogue will be encouraged between all the participants to enable open and expansive discussion about the present state of Joyce Studies and the possible trajectories that it could after the partial expiration of the copyright on some of Joyce’s texts, manuscripts, and letters.
Dr Finn Fordham (Royal Holloway, University of London) will give the keynote lecture at UCD on Thursday, 19 April, at 19.00.

Scholarships:
Scholarship funding is available for doctoral and post-doctoral students and will cover accommodation, travel, and social events.
Applicants should submit by email a curriculum vitae, a letter of introduction (specifically outlining your interests in Joyce studies and why the colloquium might be of benefit to you), an academic reference (which should be sent directly by the referee as an email attachment).
Please note that scholarship recipients are expected to actively participate in all aspects of the colloquium, including question and answer sessions as well as both formal and informal discussions.

Note that preference will be given to first-time applicants but applications from previous recipients of scholarships at UCD James Joyce Research Centre events are nonetheless also welcome; late applications may be considered in some circumstances. Post-graduate students at Irish universities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Dario Fertilio – Corriere della Sera – in “Il vero Joyce, popolare e sboccato” draws the attention on the restoration of the original Irish language of Ulysses.
Corriere also dedicates a note to two international conferences dedicated to James Joyce:  “Parallaxes. Virginia Woolf meets James Joyce” (Milan, 13-14 December 2011) and the forthcoming “Joyce and/in Italy”, which will be held in Rome on 16-17 February 2012 .

Elisabetta D’Erme – Il piccolo, 3rd January 2012 – in “Ulisse l’illeggibile adesso diventa un libro per tutti” focuses on the diffusion of Joyce’s Ulysses in Italy.

Enrico Terrinoni – Il Messaggero, 5th January 2012 – in “Joyce, l’idea di Ulisse nacque a Roma” remembers how Joyce’s idea of Ulysses originated in Rome.

We welcome proposals for pre-arranged panels consisting of 3-4 papers of 15/20 minutes each. Panels will be organized in slots of either 60 or 90 minutes.

Proposals should contain a general description of the panel theme (200-400 words), the titles of the papers, the names of the speakers with affiliations (including email addresses), as well as the name of the panel organizer. Proposals should also include the abstracts of each paper (250/300 words).

Joyce e l’Italia/ Joyce in Italia

In occasione del 130° anniversario della nascita di James Joyce, il Dipartimento di Letterature Comparate dell’Università Roma Tre ospiterà la quinta James Joyce Graduate Conference organizzata dalla James Joyce Italian Foundation, il 16 e il 17 febbraio 2012.
Si accettano contributi, in italiano e in inglese, sui rapporti di Joyce con l’Italia e con la cultura italiana, e viceversa sulla ricezione, da parte della cultura italiana, della vita e dell’opera di Joyce.
Giovani ricercatori, laureati, dottorandi, dottori di ricerca e studiosi indipendenti possono inviare proposte di interventi individuali o di sessioni di gruppo.
Il breve elenco dei temi di seguito indicato può essere integrato da altri suggerimenti:

The 5th James Joyce Graduate Conference, endorsed by The James Joyce Italian Foundation, will be hosted by the Department of Comparative Literatures at the Università Roma Tre, on February 16th and 17th 2012, to celebrate Joyce’s 130th birthday. Papers are invited on any aspect of Joyce’s response to Italy and Italian culture, and/or the Italian reception of Joyce’s life and works. Papers can be either in English or in Italian. We welcome proposals and abstracts for individual papers and for panel sessions from graduates, young researchers and independent scholars.

Concerns include, but are not limited to:

- Joyce and his Italian Contexts
- Joyce and/in translation
- Joyce and the issue of copyright
- Joyce and European nationalism
- Joyce and Internationalism
- Joyce’s teaching
- Teaching  Joyce

Proposals and abstracts should be no more than 250 words. Papers and presentations are limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. Submissions must include name, contact information, and notice of institutional affiliation or independent scholar status.

Deadline for submissions: 10th December 2011. Accepted speakers will be notified by January 10th, 2012. Proposals should be sent via email to joyce.foundation@uniroma3.it.

L’Assemblea si riunisce il giorno 3 febbraio alle ore 17.30, presso i locali del Dipartimento di Letterature Comparate, Università di Roma Tre, con il seguente ordine del giorno:

1. Comunicazioni
Il Presidente, Franca Ruggieri, esprime una valutazione positiva delle attività svolte nello scorso anno. Al bando per l’assegnazione del Giorgio Melchiori Grant, che è stato istituito come contributo per la partecipazione ad eventi e per la pubblicazione di saggi nell’ambito delle finalità della JJIF, hanno risposto numerosi giovani studiosi, italiani e stranieri. L’analisi comparativa delle domande e dei relativi curricula ha permesso di assegnare due contributi – di €400,00 l’uno – a Federico Sabatini (Università di Torino) e a Jonathan McCreedy (Belfast University), che hanno poi partecipato al XXII International James Joyce Symposium, tenutosi a Praga dal 13 al 18 June 2010.
L’evento organizzato quest’anno e appena concluso, Why read Joyce in the 21st century?, voleva sollecitare la riflessione sull’attualità dell’opera di Joyce e si è aperto a interventi di studiosi di ogni età. Il call for papers è stato pubblicizzato, come sempre, su molti siti e questa volta anche sul Times Literary Supplement, grazie al sostegno del Presidente, che ha provveduto a pagare personalmente la relativa fattura.
Dopo aver superato qualche ritardo nel corso del procedimento del peer-reviewing per la ricezione dei pareri dei referee sui contributi, e per il rinvio dei testi agli autori, gli atti della 2nd James Joyce Graduate Conference, James Joyce: Metamorphosis and Re-writing, sono ora in corso di stampa presso l’editore Bulzoni.

2. Approvazione rendiconto 2010
Il rendiconto finale dell’associazione per l’anno 2010, allegato a questo verbale, è di € 843,16, al netto dei due Giorgio Melchiori grant assegnati e del compenso devoluto al commercialista che segue gli interessi dell’Associazione per i bilanci e per i rapporti con l’Ufficio Entrate. Dopo un’ampia discussione su questa voce di spesa, si decide all’unanimità di continuare a rivolgersi al commercialista in modo da garantire una gestione corretta dell’Associazione.
Il rendiconto per l’anno 2010 è stato quindi approvato all’unanimità.
Prendendo atto della situazione finanziaria di JJIF, che in effetti a tutt’oggi può contare solo sulle quote di iscrizione, il Presidente chiede all’Assemblea di pronunciarsi a proposito di un eventuale incremento delle quote. A seguito del parere espresso da diversi soci, si decide di non procedere a nessun incremento. Il Presidente esprime per altro l’auspicio che qualche membro possa decidere di sostenere l’associazione con un contributo più cospicuo.

3.Programmazione attività
Il Presidente informa l’assemblea del fatto che nel corso dell’anno sarà pubblicata on-line una selezione dei contributi alla Third Graduate Conference, “Joyce and Modernism” (UCD, 22-23 gennaio 2010) e dell’ultima IV James Joyce Birthday Conference, “Why read Joyce in the 21st century?” (Roma Tre, 2-3 febbraio 2011).
Il Presidente comunica quindi la disponibilità del Prof. Brian Caraher a organizzare una Graduate Conference nel febbraio 2012 al Queen’s University Belfast. Dopo un’ampia discussione si decide di accettare l’offerta, che sottolinea la dimensione internazionale della James Joyce Italian Foundation. Si sottolinea allo stesso tempo la necessità di assicurarsi che il comitato organizzatore dell’evento includa una equa rappresentanza di JJIF e che nell’evento la nostra Associazione riceva la giusta visibilità, nel rispetto delle aspettative dei giovani studiosi membri dell’Associazione.
Il Presidente esprime l’auspicio, condiviso dall’assemblea, di poter bandire presto un numero congruo di borse di studio (Giorgio Melchiori grant).
Dal momento che il convegno annuale verrà tenuto a Belfast, si decide di organizzare una giornata di studio a Roma in occasione dell’assemblea del JJIF. Il tema del convegno/seminario sarà una riflessione sullo stato del copyright Joyceano a 70 anni della morte dell’autore e delle nuove traduzioni in uscita per l’occasione.
John McCourt comunica la disponibilità dell’Irish Studies Centre dell’University of Vienna di ospitare una “James Joyce birthday graduate conference” nel 2014. Per ora nessuna decisione viene presa al riguardo.

4. Regolamento
Il Presidente ritiene opportuno lavorare alla stesura di un Regolamento e sollecita la costituzione di un gruppo di lavoro a questo fine. I soci interessati possono dare la propria disponibilità anche in seguito.

A further piece of good news is that the JJIF has recently received a donation of 1,000 euros from a member of the Foundation who wishes to remain anonymous. We feel that this is an exceptionally good omen and sincerely hope that others will follow his or her example.

The meeting takes place in the Department of Comparative Literature, University of Rome 3, on February 3, at 5.30 pm,to discuss the following items on the agenda:

1. Opening remarks
The President, Franca Ruggieri, espressed satisfaction at how the past year has gone. Numerous young scholars, from Italy and abroad, applied for the Giorgio Melchiori Grant, which was established at the last general meeting as a means of promoting one of the JJIF’s aims – that is, to help your scholars take part in conferences and to publish their work. After examining the curricula of the applicants, two grants of Euro 400 were awarded to given to Federico Sabatini (Università di Torino) and to Jonathan McCreedy (Queen’s University Belfast). Both participated at the 22^nd  International James Joyce Symposium, held in Prague  from 13 to 18 June 2010.

The event organised for this year, which concluded just before this meeting, Why read Joyce in 21st century?,  set out to promote an examination of Joyce’s works today and was open to scholars of all ages. The call for papers was published, as usual, on many sites and also, in the Times Literary Supplement, thanks to the President, who paid for this advertisement personally.

The Acts of the 2nd James Joyce Graduate Conference, James Joyce: Metamorphosis and Re-writing, are, after some delays in the peer-reviewing and subsequent revision processes now going to press and are about to be published by Bulzoni.

2. Approval of 2010 statement of accounts
The association’s final balance sheet (appended to these minutes) at the end of 2010 is € 843,16. This is what remains after the payment of the 2 Giorgio Melchiori grants and the fees of the accountant who does the books and takes care of all dealings with the Ufficio Entrate (tax office). Following a long discussion with regard to this item of expenditure, it was unanimously agreed to continue to use this accountant in order to guarantee that the affairs of the association are correctly managed.

The 2010 statement of accounts was unanimously approved.

In light of the financial situation in which the JJIF finds itself – being able to rely only on membership fees – the President asked the assembly for its opinion about raising fees. Several members spoke in favor of keeping membership fees at current rates and this was agreed by the assembly. The President expressed the hope that some members might decide to support the association with personal contributions.

3. Future plans
The President informed the meeting that a selection of papers from the  Third Graduate Conference, “Joyce and Modernism”  (UCD, 22-23 January 2010)  and the most recent IV James Joyce Birthday Conference, “Why read Joyce in 21st century?”  (Roma Tre 2-3 february 2011) would be published on-line in the coming year. She also announced the willingness of Prof. Brian Caraher to organize a Graduate Conference in February 2012 at Queen’s University Belfast. After a broad discussion the assembly agreed to accept this offer which bolsters the international dimension of The James Joyce Italian Foundation. At the same several members expressed the need to make sure that the JJIF was fairly represented on the organising committee and that the association and its young members were given sufficient visibility during the event.

The President expressed the hope, which was shared by the meeting, that the Association would be able to fund several Giorgio Melchiori grants in the coming year.

Given that the annual conference will be held in Belfast it was decided to organize a one-day event in Rome to coincide with the AGM of the JJIF. The theme of conference/seminar will centre around the situation with regard to Joyce copyright 70 years after the author’s death and will also focus on new translations that will appear around this date.

John McCourt told the assembly that the recently established Irish Studies Centre at  the University of Vienna has expressed its willingness to host a “James Joyce birthday graduate conference” in 2014. For the moment no decision was taken in this regard.

4. Statute of regulations
The President called for the drawing up of a statute of regulations and for the formation of a work group to carry this out. Interested members were asked to put their names forward.

5. Any other business
There was no further business.

“Why Read Joyce in the 21st Century” is an international conference organized by The James Joyce Italian Foundation on the 129th anniversary of James Joyce’s birth. It will be the occasion for debating the reception of James Joyce’s works in the new millennium, both in relation to the critical output of the academic community and to the more general response of the common reader. The conference will host speakers from 26 universities and 13 counties across the world (Italy, Ireland, USA, UK, Spain, Denmark, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Canada, France).

James Joyce Birthday Conference will be open on February 1st, with the presentation of CRISIS, Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale per gli Studi Irlandesi e Scozzesi and of Fondo Giorgio Melchiori. Then, Orlando Mezzabotta will introduce the video of Pankquean, Francesco Paradiso will talk about James Joyce and theatre introducing his work Come suona la torza rima, Massimo Bacigalupo will talk about Bloomsday in Genoa.

A roundtable with the title L’Italia senza Joyce? will involve Rosa Maria Bosinelli, Gabriele Frasca, Tommaso Ottonieri, Jacqueline Risset, Enrico Terrinoni.

In the evening, the presentation of Birthday Jollyfications by Liam Healy, Ecole Supérieure de Commerce Clermont-Ferrand at Fiddler’s Elbow, via dell’Olmata (below the full programme of the day).
